Move over Kinesio® Tape … there’s a new kid in town. It’s called SpiderTech™ Tape, and it’s looking like it could become sports medicine’s “it” product for 2009.
Kerri Walsh’s kinesiology tape fashion statement
| |
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, US beach volleyball player, Kerri Walsh, attracted almost as much attention for the black kinesiology tape on her shoulder as she did for her gold medal performance on the sand. Since then, millions of people have sought out this thin, stretchy tape for its miraculous ability to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and much more.

Unfortunately, while effective, most kinesiology tape isn’t as user-friendly as many would like. It comes in rolls, and must be precisely cut into intricate configurations and then carefully applied to benefit most athletic injuries. Without investing a significant amount of time and money into specialized training, a roll of kinesiology tape is virtually useless in the hands of the average person.
The Biggest Benefit of SpiderTech Tape is Ease of application
That’s where SpiderTech comes in. A Canadian chiropractor who loved helping his patients with kinesiology tape but hated the time and expense associated with applying it, came up with a brilliant idea. Why not create pre-cut, individually packaged kinesiology tape applications for different parts of the body? He hooked up with a committed investor, and SpiderTech Tape was born. Fortuitous timing allowed them to partner with the Japanese manufacturer of the original kinesiology tape created over 30 years ago, and still considered to be the gold standard.
Spider Tech Kinesiology tape is available for multiple applications and body parts
|
SpiderTech pre-cut applications are currently available for the wrist, elbow, shoulder, upper back, lower back, hip, hamstring, groin, knee and calf/arch. With simple step-by-step instructions right in the packaging plus online instructional videos, this is as consumer-friendly as kinesiology taping will ever be.
Although some of the applications may appear complex, it’s simply a matter of “tape by numbers” … remove the backing and apply each segment, beginning with #1, and continue until finished.
I've worked personally with kinesiology tape manufacturers
I’ve had the opportunity to work with both Kinesio® Tape (which only come in rolls) and SpiderTech Tape, which comes in both rolls and pre-cut configurations. Even though I have a master’s degree in exercise physiology and am pretty well-versed in medical jargon, I was completely overwhelmed by the technical language in the Kinesio® Tape instruction manuals.

When I tried my first SpiderTech pre-cut, I opened the package and found two great things The first was a piece of beautifully-constructed kinesiology tape, specifically designed for a body part. The backing on the reverse side of the tape was labeled with numbers showing the exact sequence to follow to apply it correctly. The backing was also scored in several places, which allowed me to remove the backing only from the segment I was about to apply – a great feature for those like me who tend to get the tape pieces all stuck together.
I found the second great thing when I removed the package insert and discovered simple, easy-to-follow application instructions printed on the reverse side. After shouting, “Halleluiah,” I went to work and had the application in place in no time.
No Fraying

As I continued to wear my SpiderTech application, I experienced another benefit that comes only with pre-cut kinesiology tape. Because all of the edges are machine-cut in the factory (as opposed to being hand-cut with scissors), I didn’t get any of the fraying that typically begins a day or so after applying kinesiology tape from a roll. It stayed on for the full 5 days I wore it, and looked almost as good at the end as it did when I put it on.
Other than a slight loosening near a couple of the end pieces, the adhesive continued to hold for the entire time I wore it, despite the fact that I sweated profusely, showered and swam with it on.

All in all, I give SpiderTech Tape a 10 out of 10. It’s the first kinesiology tape that can be used directly by consumers. It does everything it promises, and it’s economical. At less than $10 for most applications, it’s a no-brainer for anyone who wants the benefits of kinesiology tape without having to pay an appointment fee and/or an application fee.
While optimum effectiveness will always come from a professional application, there’s no reason why anyone shouldn’t give SpiderTech tape a try.
What Makes SpiderTech Tape so Great?
- It has the same thickness and elasticity as human skin – once it’s been applied, you don’t feel it. It’s breathable and waterproof–it can be worn during intense exercise, swimming and showering.
- It’s designed to be worn 24/7 for 5 days or more, providing long-term therapeutic benefits that no other modality can duplicate.
- Because all of the edges are machine-cut, it doesn’t fray and loosen as much as kinesiology taping applications that have been hand-cut from a roll of tape.
