Breg’s Polar Care Cub is a compact, cost-effective manual icing system ideal for managed care or minor procedures. Better than an ice pack and easier to take with you than icing systems that require electricity, this manual pump does the trick.

Portable Polar Care Cub Icing System Provides Cold Relief without Electricity

Cost is about $89-$135 for the manual cooling unit. It includes a pad but the specially designed ones below are extra.
  • Wrap on ankle about $60 (one size fits all)
  • Wrap on knee about $60 (reg, L, XL)
  • Wrap on shoulder $80-$90 (Reg, XL)

You've got to go to your kid's soccer game and you've just had knee surgery. The icing system you have requires electricity. Well, if you have a family of athletes, it might not be a bad idea to have the Polar Care Cub. It is the most cost-effective portable manual icing system around. And it's far better, easier and less messy than an ice pack.

BREG’s Polar Cub offers the following benefits:
* The smallest, most lightweight cold therapy unit available
* Easy-to-use hand pump allows unit to provide cold therapy when a power supply is unavailable

The PolarCare Cub is made by Breg and designed to maintain a constant cool temperature and compression over the limb or joint that is swelling or painful. Breg is a leading manufacturer of cold therapy devices. There are certainly times when you'd like a portable system that does not require electricity. And cold therapy is a proven system for providing both effective pain relief and compression.

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is also known as cold therapy and it works. Basically, it is the treatment of pain and swelling by lowering the temperature of the skin over the affected area. It reduces pain, swelling and speeds recovery after injury and surgery.

Many sports med surgeons and physical therapists recommend these so athletes can get back to their sport without losing their competitive edge and it is often recommended for use by a surgeon following knee ligament sprains and ACL injuries and arthroscopic surgeries although you usually will get the electric units from either Breg Polar Care or Aircast CryoCuff.

How does it work?

The Polar Care Cub has a built-in hand pump to circulate the cold water through the Polar Pad while it increases compression around the joint; ankle, knee or shoulder. The Cub is designed for portability, ease of use, and it has a versatile list of uses ranging from sprains to post operative swelling and pain management.

It really is easy to use. Just fill the cooler up with ice and top off with water. You can attach the cooler tube to the included pad and apply wherever you are experiencing pain or swelling. There are velcro straps that keep the pad in place and it can conform it to your body part.

To get it going, you pump the manual pump 5-6 times and it circulates soothing cryotherapy right away. You'll feel the effects almost immediately.

The fluid in the pad gets warm after about 20 minutes so you just repeat the above process and the water re-circulates. The pad is versatile and works for a number of limbs, body parts and joints. Other icing therapy units work by having you elevate the device above your extremity (or lifting from a table) every 15-20 minutes.

Will a prescription cover the cost?

Probably not, particularly for the portable unit. Some insurance does but hospitals often send you home with one and you think you've scored an awesome new toy until the bill comes. And like the $20 tylenol pill, they don't just pass on the cost but double it. Not always but often enough.

At any rate, they rarely send you home with this one. This is just a great little travel unit. While ice can't be had in every venue, you can pack it with enough at home to last a good part of a day. Sometimes you get the unit from a physical therapist. So it's not a bad idea to go ahead and get one of these if you are anticipating a surgical procedure. Cryotherapy is very effective in the rehabilitation process and so the icing is a crucial part of getting better faster.

Which is better, Aircast CryoCuff or Breg Polar Care.

It depends.

The Polar Care Cub is popular because it is the smallest and most lightweight cold therapy unit available and does not need electricity. A lot of people like the specialized pads for CryoCuff better. Some don't like to elevate the CryoCuff unit and the Polar Care cuff has two hoses so the water is constantly circulating.

Very few people have tried both. And for certain, most people worship these units since they provide such incredible pain relief often severely reducing the amount of pain medication you have to take. Both are very high quality units with impeccable customer service and those who've tried one or the other swear by the unit they used.

Best Buy for portable and lightweight icing.

Of all the available cold therapy units, this one is the best of the icing systems and products that are manual and portable. The price is good and customer service with this company is outstanding.

Portable ice that stays cold

This is what I used after acl surgery. It's very portable and lightweight. But it stays cold much longer than a regular icepack so I did not take pain meds. I took them at night but during the day I used this. i have the other attachments now and just used it for a wrist sprain. I was able to take it to work. I can sit at a desk and use it.

Polar Bear Cub (vs. Cryocuff gravity feed system)

I had 2 shoulder surgeries, scheduled roughly 10 months apart. My first surgeon sent me home with the Cryocuff system (gravity controlled). There is only one tube and I had to keep lifting the heavy unit above and below shoulder level every time the water warmed up. I thought it was great compared to a regular ice pack, but kind of hated using my weaker (non-dominant) arm to lift the unit up and down and up and down every 20 minutes (but could not wear it for the ride home since I could not lift it high enough in the car to exchange the water). **Then, my second surgery, I was fitted with the Polar Bear Cub (hand pump system), and it was on when I woke up from surgery. All I had to do was press the bulb a few times, and it numbed my entire shoulder quite nicely, and made the 1.5 hour drive home much more bearable, and I did not have to be as drugged up for the drive home (reducing my nausea greatly). The bulb was hard for me to pump, but I could use my knees to press the bulb when I was alone. The tubes have much more insulation, meaning that the ice lasted much longer, and there is no air valve that had to be opened to allow the water to flow (unlike the cryocuff, which meant my clumsy one-armed efforts ended up spilling the water more than once- on my wood floors). This unit is FAR superior than the Cryocuff in my opinion! The attachment shown in the picture above (looks like a big butterfly) is what I was given for my shoulder, but due to all the straps that come with the unit, I have used it on my neck, ankle, foot, knee, back, forearm, etc. Shape of the pad is interesting to work with, but stretch velcro atraps were included. Due to the economy- for anyone that cannot afford this type of unit, try 2 of the large "Polar Pack" ice packs (use this particular brand, they are not your normal gel ice pack)- they stay cold for hours (use one at a time and switch out), cost about $20 each from any chiro or PT. If you can afford the unit, though, I highly recommend it!

Relieved pain from sprained ankle

I like that I can get this for all body parts. I have owned it for years and it is such a worthwhile investment. Easy to take places too.

Polar Care for the Knee

Just started using the Polar Care system after having a torn meniscus repaired in my left knee. I was given the system by CJW Medical Center Johnston Willis Campus (HCA) as part of the post-surgical procedures. I've got the square cooler version that holds a lot of ice and water, just one or two fill-ups a day.

The system is fantastic, easy to use, plug and unplug, etc. Got it connected to an extension cord to a power strip by my couch so I can work on my computer with my leg raised and just turn off the power strip when I want to get up and disconnect the hose from the unit to the wrap on my knee. The wrap is very easy to use and is the best conforming wrap I've ever used. No leaks!

I highly recommend the Polar Care system for injuries requiring constant icing.
