Asics Gel Kayano 16 Review

The Gel Kayano continues the tradition of being the gold standard in preventing injury and helping correct biomechanical issues that could potentially lead to athletic injury. The new Asics Gel Kayano 16 offers a few changes but the same great cushioning and features you love.

IF YOU LIKE THE Asics Gel Kayano 15, they are still available so order those if they work for you!

Asics Gel Kayano 16 is superior stabilizing and cushioning shoe.

And the biggest change in the Gel Kayano 16 would be the guidance line that helps you with a consistent foot strike. Another big difference is that Asics Gel Kayano 16 has lost weight, 1/2 ounce to be exact. This might not be a big deal for the 5-miler but is a key difference for those running longer distances.

The lacing pattern which appears to be crooked, is asymmetrical for a reason. It allows to follow the bone and form of your foot to offer a great fit. Cushioning is remarkable and it spreads the shock evenly across your foot. It\'s the gel base running from heel to toe that evens out the pressure on the bottom of the foot. This model also has even greater cushioning in the forefoot.

Asics Gel Kayano 16: Maximum support for moderate to maximum overpronation.

These are worth every cent if you are an overpronator. And I find the arch support to be excellent.

Asics Gel Kayano continues to be a good choice for heavy runners and those who are prone to shin splints (TSS)

// -->

The Asics Gel Kayano 16 is ideal for runners over 155. While Gel Kayanos are known to suit heavy runners, they are also suitable for people with other running issues such as:

  • Shin splints
  • Overpronation
  • Thos who suffer from foot pain on the bottom of their feet
  • Great for weak ankles (often typical for those with high arches)
  • Gel Kayano 15s seem to reallly help if you are prone to plantar fasciitis

These run true to size which means that you may wear a larger size than you do in other shoes, but they run pretty much like other running shoes. Nike runs smaller so if you are going from Nike to Asics, you need to make sure of your size.

Pricy but worth it

If you need a stability shoe and are prone to over pronation or shin splints, this is the shoe many runners will point to. I do wince when I pay for them but am always glad I took the plunge. They last about 5 months but I can't rate them tops for durability. I do start to feel pain in my Achilles which means I need to get new shoes. As soon as I get new ones, all knee or Achilles pain goes away. So these are definitely keeping me in the game.

Shin splints are no longer

These are wonderiful shoes. I am so glad I found them. I suffered from shin splints and my pt told me I was wearing the wrong kind of shoes. I do some exercises but I've started wearing these. No blisters, no shin splints. love them.

The best!

To start I have only had these shoes two weeks so I can not honestly rate there durability yet. Everything else about this shoe is amazing! I'm an average runner, 3 to 5 miles per run 4x per week. I've always been prone to shin splints, foot, ankle and knee aches, not any more though! I'm so glad I finally did some research and spent the money on these shoes. I hoenstly could not be happier, I no longer have any pain during or after my runs, I am running longer and I can feel the difference in each step. It's like running on clouds. Hopefully they'll hold up. I would reccomend these shoes to anyone! This is my first pair of Asics and I don't forsee myself going with another shoe, ever.

The gel kayano 16s are primo

These shoes are heaven. It's hard to say how durable the 16s are but I have worn all the other numbers and they wear great. I had so many itb band issues before discovering these shoes. Amazing that shoes can make such a difference in what hurts and what aches. I'm a middle distance runner, 5-10 miles per run about 4-5 times per week.

The lacing is great for me

The lacing is awesome for me. It's the reason I like the 16s better than the 14s. But I guess everyone's foot is different. I had the asymetrical lacing with my last pair so I new it was good for me.

Love these shoes

I love the Asics Gel Kayano 16s but my running partner who has worn them for years mentioned that the asymmetrical lacing as more pronounced on the 16s than the 15s. For whatever reason, he had difficulties with the 16s and went back to the Gel Kayano 15s which are still available. He actually switches between the two but he mostly wears the Gel Kayano 15s. So if the 15s work for you, don't switch! Stay with those since you can still get them.

Should not have left

I was running with the Gel Kayano 15's until they wore out. Decided to try something else, just to see if I coud find something less pricey. Bought a pair of Asics GT-2150's and got a new blister everytime I ran in them. Took them back, and got a pair of Mizuno Wave Inspire. Hated them! Like running in bare feet. No cushioning at all. Now, I'm back to the Kayano's and everything is good. I love these shoes. Haven't had the "big toe" problem yet (knock on wood), so I'll just keep running and never leave again!

Asics runner

Love the new lacing pattern. Much better fit in toe box. The Keyanos have always offered the most comfort for heavy runners like me - 177 pounds. A bit expensive, but you only have one pair of feet. Only getting 350-400 miles per pair which is a little disappointing. Averaqe 25-30 miles per week on 4-5 runs.

And, when first tried on, could tell immediately they were lighter: 12.5 oz vs 13.0 oz.

Another lacing problem with the Kayano 16

I too have found a problem with the lacing system on the Kayano 16. After completing a very hilly half on Saturday, May 1st, I noticed that the joint of my big toe on the left foot was very sore, to the point I was having a hard time walking. It is better now as far as walking is concerned (four days later), but I am still not able to run in those shoes. Just putting them on brings the pain back. I am going back to the store (Arlington Heights, IL), shoes in hand, on Saturday May 8th; I will update and let all know what they say.

I have had the 14's and the 15's, both without this problem. The 15's even have the off-set lacing system, and I never experienced this problem once.

As far as cushioning, support and stability, I am very pleased with the shoe. I get about 300 miles out of my Kayanos; the durability is obviously influenced by my 220 pound frame.

I can't believe I will be returning them...after a

I have been running in the Kayano for over 8 years and loved them. They have seem my through many miles and several marathons. They have helped with shin splints, too. I only wore my new pair (version 16) for a short 3 mile run on the treadmill. The lacing system really irritates the joint of my big toe. I have a slight bunion on each foot, so the asymmetrical design does not work for me.

Now, I need to find a new, similar, shoe...any suggestions? Thanks

Jennifer

Okay, but liked the 14's the best

I still like the Kayano's, but really liked the 14's best. My IT band issues are coming back with the 16's for some reason. The lacing system doesn't bother my toe like some are saying, but I just don't like the looks of it. It took me SO long to find the Kayano's, lots of trial and error, and I really don't want to go through that again, but I'm just not crazy about the 16's. Might have to start looking elsewhere.
