It doesn't effect every one this way. In fact, it effects very few people this way. But Chondroitin Glucosamine makes me very tired. So tired in fact, I'll fall asleep in my office. And it's a deep sleep, too. I thought I was the only one who experienced this.
But when I look at the statistics for this site, I notice that other people are searching in an effort to find out if others do, too. The answer is yes they do. It's only about one search per week but there are others out there.
So what is the solution?
Well, you obviously cannot take it at 8am. Although the stuff works on achy joints, it is counterproductive if you can't stay awake for your racquetball game or your drive home. And you can't take it three times a day at intervals or you will be awake so few hours of the day. So I take it about 6-9pm. And I take one or I take two.
Funny thing is, I tend to wake up early if I take it. But I am usually a late sleeper. Or would like to be. Getting out of bed always feels like I need a crowbar. But when I take this at night, I don't have trouble getting up in the morning. So while I might not be getting all the benefits of it by not taking 3 per day, it still has positive effects on my joints. My ankles don't crack when I walk which has been an issue since I was 12. I just have to take it later in the day. Better than sleeping pills I'd say.
So why does it make you sleepy?
I don't know. I've wondered if it's the chondroitin. Why? Because I am allergic to shrimp and it has shellfish ingredients. I have none of the severe problems I have with shrimp when I take this supplement, though. Shrimp makes me really ill not tired. Shrimp makes me swell up like a balloon. This doesn't. So it's a mystery. And I'm no chemist.
I can't take a multivitamin for the opposite reason. Those make me an insomniac. I can take some separate supplements such as calcium, magnesium and some others. But can't tolerate a multi if I want to sleep at all at night.
I just wanted you to know you are not alone and it is real. Chondroitin Glucosamine really can make some people sleepy.
