All ice packs are not created equal. I've actually had this cold pack over 10 years and it's very versatile. It has the gel already in the pack so you don't have to insert it and it conforms to your body. So if you strap it to a knee you can stand up and walk somewhere in the house.

Sometimes you just need the ice pack you can keep in the freezer. Mine stays there until I need it. It is ideal for sprains and strains to the ankles, wrists, elbows, knees and more. I use it on my arch after running to keep plantar fasciitis from returning. It quickly reduces pain and swelling and features the latest Dual-TempĀ® technology for direct contact with the body. So you do not have to worry about ice burn.
My favorite part is that it velcros on which means I end up wearing it the full 20 minutes or so instead of getting tired of holding a pack or balancing one on the injured body part. I can get up and get a glass of water or retrieve a pen without having to remove it.
In terms of durability, like I said earlier, I've had mine over 10 years. I will admit to liking the original two strap design better than the new design but this one still beats most ice packs for convenience, effectiveness and conforming to a body part. And it's more comfortable than actual cubes of ice by far.

This does come in shapes and designs that suit back and shoulder pain. Those, too, can velcro on so it stays where you want it.
