Description
| Doctors describe Hyalgan injections, derived from rooster combs, as "jelly injections" due to their thickness or viscosity |
Usually administered by a rheumatologist or orthopedist, Hyalgan is viscous solution injected serially into the knee three to fives times, each injection a week apart. It is derived from rooster combs and is used essentially to provide a lubricating effect for the arthritic joint, thereby reducing pain. Because pain is reduced, surgical intervention is often delayed, or, in some cases, even prevented.
Side Effects:
The most common side effects are injection-site pain, swelling, heat and/or redness, rash, itching, or bruising around the joint; most of these side effects are mild and short-lived.
