Product Resources

We reviewed the Gel Kayano at Gel Kayano 12. And we're back to reviewing this stabilizer mainstay. Known for preventing shin splints and a number of other biomechanical issues such as ITB band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, achilles pain and even bursitis of the knee, this running shoe has the rare combination of great arch support and pronation prevention. these are not cheap shoes but I've found they last a long time.

We don't review many shoes here opting instead to review only those that have proven the gold standard in preventing injury and helping correct biomechanical issues leading to athletic injury.

Typically, most stabilizer shoes don't offer phenomenal arch support as it's assumed stabilizer fans are flat footed.

I wasn't as impressed with Gel Kayano 13 or 14 but am back on board for Gel Kayano 15 and 16. And yes, I've tried on the new Gel Kayano 16 but opted for the sale shoe as I was very happy with the fit. They are divine to run in if you have pronation. I had tried some "neutral" shoes but ended up getting pain in the knees and other joints. So at the store, I thought the Gel Kayano 16 rocked. But since the 15s did, too and they were on sale, I went for it.

The lacing pattern which appears to be crooked, works great. Cushioning is remarkable and it spreads the shock evenly across your foot. My feet are not sore after running in these.

Asics Gel Kayano 15: Best Shoes for heavy runners

The story is that the army wanted to order running shoes and was unable to find anything appropriate that would last for soldiers over 155. So the Gel Kayano was born. While Gel Kayanos are known to suit heavy runners, they are also suitable for people with other running issues such as:

See the sportsmedinfo.net Running Shoe Guide written by a running shoe store owner who fits runners all day, every day.

  • Suitable for those who are more prone to shin splints
  • Known for stability, support and comfort
  • Little or no foot fatigue on long distance runs
  • Great for weak ankles (often typical for those with high arches)
  • Those who suffer from shin splints swear by these
  • Gel Kayano 15s seem to reallly help if you are prone to plantar fasciitis

These run true to size which means that you may wear a larger size than you do in other shoes, but they run pretty much like other running shoes. Nike runs smaller so if you are going from Nike to Asics, you need to make sure of your size.

I love these shoes. Pain I was having evaporated when I ran with them on. They are great for overpronators with high arches since they provide great arch support. My feet don't hurt and I avoid reoccurrance of plantar fasciitis. They are pricey but worth it since I was spending $$ on all sorts of aids to run with other shoes in testing those for this website. I had developed an inflamed bursa which went away once I used these shoes and a strip of kinesio tape.

Other runners interviewed who like stabilizer shoes also gave these a very favorable rating. As always, no one shoe is for everyone and it depends on your issues. But if what is listed here are issues you have, these are worth every blessed penny.

I bought these while I was deployed in 2008 and used them to log nearly 1,000 miles on foot, including a few 10k's and a dozen triathlons. They are fantastic shoes, extremely durable, and comfy too.
