The Brooks Defyance 4 is a neutral version of the popular Brooks Adrenalin GTS. The Defyance is very well balanced and built on the same sole as Brook’s Adrenalin GTS. The Defyance 4 is a low-slung trainer with good support ready for high or low mileage.
Price: Under $100
Category: Neutral
Weight: 10.9 oz in men’s 8.9 oz women’s
Fits out of the box like an old pair of jeans with support and cushion
It offers great cushioning for a neutral runner and has a generous amount of cushioning without sacrificing shoe flexibility. It is 10.9 ounces for a men’s size nine and given the amount of cushioning, that’s lightweight. All features work together well and it’s a very versatile shoe under $100.
Good arch support for those who suffer from plantar fasciitis or have high arches
The arch support is stronger on this new model, which is particularly good for plantar fasciitis sufferers while the upper part of the shoe is a wrap that works through the arch. Runners really like this and commented that they feel like custom fit shoes.
Good choice for custom orthotics wearers
If you wear custom foot orthotics these are a good choice since the orthotics provide the stability.
Complaints
Some complain about the the lack of forefoot cushioning—a result of the shoe's low profile and probably not a good choice if you run on your toes. This can work for beginning runners or any runner looking for versatility in a training shoe.
In summary
- Very smooth
- Fits like a custom shoe right out of the box
- Works well for stability runners who now wear custom orthotics
- Great for high arches
