Of all the updates this shoe has been through, this one is flat out superb. Gone is the asymmetrical lacing system. While I really liked this, many felt it irritated their upper foot. I will say I don’t miss it with this one since there are so many new improvements that are luxurious.
Overall improvements for Asics Gel Kayano 18
- Less weight
- Improved upper fit
- Softer more comfortable feel
- More cushioning
- Improved Flexibility
- Hugs the heel without friction
- No asymmetrical lacing
It rates well for comfort, cushioning, weight, pronation control and support.
Excellent arch support that all models are known for. It’s a pricey shoe but runners like it because they do not tend to get as much injury and knee pain with this legendary running shoe model.
The Asics Gel Kayano 18 lost weight and goes faster
The most noticeable improvement is that it is even lighter than the 17. A whole ounce lighter. Despite being lighter than the other versions in the past they do not sacrifice any stability or cushioning. Men's size 9 is 11.5 oz. Women’s 7 is 9.7 oz.
Do note that lighter shoes have mesh and this means that if if rains, it gets to your socks that much faster. Just something to keep in mind.
Gel Kayano 18 is still made for the heavy guy over 200 pounds as well as the 150 pound guy
Not many running shoes work for guys over 200 pounds. But the Gel Kayano 18 still stays loyal to the 200+ crowd. Runners in this category will find these every bit as comfortable and pleasing to the foot as before. It may even offer more mileage than than previous versions
Gel Kayano 18 features an external Heel Clutching system
They removed the traditional internal heel components and replaced it with an external heel counter that is more comfortable and a better fit. This decreases the probability of friction and blistering while hugging the heel more to keep the foot cradled in the shoe limiting heel slip. That also means less wear to the liner.
The ride is very smooth ride thanks to the bigger GEL® unit under foot. It also features a lower profile and a DuoMax insole that is more responsive and more cushioned.
