Athletic Tape/Wraps

Athletic Tape/Wraps For: Muscle and joint pain/injury and recovery.

UPDATED REVIEW! KT Tape is a specially developed high performance elastic athletic tape used to treat muscle and joint injuries. This particular brand of kinesiology tape comes in precut strips.

KT Tape is manufactured and developed by Lumos Inc., which is based in Utah and designs products for the sports med and fitness industry. KT Tape is officially endorsed by Kerri Walsh, the two-time Olympic Beach Volley Ball Gold Medalist.

How KT Tape Works. The Magic Tape

KT Tape provides relief from muscle pain, prevents muscle injury provides functional support, reduces swelling and enhances recovery for athletes of all levels. Once applied, the tape lasts 3-5 days. You can shower with it, run with it, swim with it.

How does it work?

Kinesiology Taping is intended to alleviate pain and facilitate lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. The taped portion forms convolutions in the skin, increasing interstitial space (tissue space).

KT Tape Facts:

  • Includes instructions for common applications
  • Latex Free
  • Water Resistant
  • Can be worn for up to 4 days per application
  • Includes 20 Kwik Strips™ per roll
  • Each roll is 2” x 16.4’
  • 140% elasticity for full range of motion and support
  • Available in Black, Beige, Pink, and Blue
  • Now available in team colors as well as lymphatic pre cut, continuous rolls and jumbo rolls
KT Tape is machine cut, and comes in multiple application formats.
  • For example, there is Edema KT Tape, also known as the octopus tape, that is used to reduce swelling
  • 5" and 8" precut strips
  • KT Tape Jumbo Rolls both continuous and precut
  • team colors

The result is that pressure and irritation are taken off the neural and sensory receptors, alleviating pain. Pressure is gradually taken off the lymphatic system, allowing it to channel more freely.

It can be difficult to grasp the concept around which this works. But it does. When it doesn't work, it's due to poor application technique, injury that is beyond the scope of what kinesiology tape can accomplish (ie. it won't fix a torn muscle), incorrect diagnosis and thus the wrong application.

Kerri Walsh officially endorses KT Tape

Application of KT Tape is Key to its Effectiveness for your injury

For the best results, Kinesio Athletic Tape should be applied at least 30 minutes prior to exercise so the heat activated adhesive can adjust and bond with the skin temperature. The correct application means stretching it in the right places while applying depending on your injury or preventive goal. The kinesiology tape has 140% elasticity which matches that of human skin.

Does KT tape tape offer support?

KT Tape does offer the kind of physical support that will prevent your ankle from turning over but it does provide functional support. You'd use an ankle brace or tape with a sports tape such as coach tape for that type of support which limits your ROM or range of motion. Since it has as much stretch as your skin, it can move with you while providing functional support.

The Kinesiology Taping Method means taping over and around muscles to assist and give the kind of support that prevents over-contraction and allows full range of motion. This is different from the kind of support for which you'd use an athletic tape such as coach tape which is intended to limit range of motion. There has been a lot of confusion over the definition of support.

KT Tape features easy-to-use, precut 5", 10" and 18" strips. Uncut, edema precut also available

KT Tape is packaged in easy-to-use, pre-cut strips. Each strip is 10 inches. The width is 2 inches wide but easily splits the width to 1-inch strips to make the “Y” strip for applications such as tennis elbow, knee and shoulder applications.

The machine cut ends and strong adhesive make the tape more water resistant as well as more user friendly.

The advantage of this tape if you get pre cut rolls is that you don’t have to have scissors, which makes things easier. But like all kinesiology tape, you do need to know how to apply it correctly for it to work best. Each package comes with instructions on some basic applications because application technique is important to its effectiveness.

What's available in KT Tape now

Now continuous rolls are available that are not pre cut if you want to use that. Team colors, lymphatic pre cut tape and pro length for medical professionals is now available in addition to the pre cut tape.

A book, or the help of a qualified physical therapist who can teach you to apply it would not hurt. KT tape makes the most and the best videos for the consumer. Step by step hand holding instructions and where to stretch and where not to stretch are included on both this site and theirs.

Which Kinesiology tape is best?

It depends.

Kinesio Tex, SpiderTech and KT Tape all work.

Kinesiology Tape will fray at the edges if you cut it with regular scissors. So use kinesio pro scissors or very sharp scissors such as those used for surgery or sewing when you are not using the pre cut tape. Durability is seems a little behind spidertech and KT Tape lately. But it could be due to our getting the old inventory.

KT Tape does come with instructions on some basic injuries in the package and video support on the internet is good. It’s glue is strong enough so an application lasts up to 4 days and most users report that it will make it through a hot tub soak. Make sure you activate the glue by rubbing it with the opposite site of the backing to warm it. This makes a huge difference. It is an easy application for plantar fasciitis as you do not have to fork tape it. Educational videos for KT tape are excellent.

If you want a roll to throw in your sports bag, then a roll of KT Tape is ideal. If you know what you suffer from and want to have that particular application in your bag for fast applying, the SpiderTech tape would be the one to have.

If stickiness is an issue, most athletic trainers suggest a pre tape spray called Cramer Tuf Skin. However, some have found they have an allergic reaction so test this on your skin on a small patch first!

This isn't really a support tape but provides functional support. For immobilizing, you'd want a different kind of tape. KT Tape is a healing and pain relief tape. I especially like it for plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis. I use KT tape for plantar fasciitis when I feel it might flair up to circumvent it reoccurring again. This one is just the easiest for that application.

If I'm going out of town, I can stick a couple of pieces of tape in my purse just in case. I like the precut strips and not having to have scissors. This is truly an advantage. Video support is also excellent and so I refer to it until I get the hang of a particular application. The mobile site has come in handy for applications as well.

KT Tape is a company with a very human quality. They respond to their customer base and make every effort to answer customer questions and help resolve issues. This goes a long way with me as a consumer and I believe helps them stay on the cutting edge in terms of marketing a product that suits their target audience.

I love this tape. Hurt my lower back and did the asterisk looking application and it provided more relief than I expected. I took ibuprofin, iced it some and then used the KT tape and I managed to get some sleep once I did that. On the mend now and it is much better. I swear I would not be able to stand up without it. It seems to sort of loosen up the muscle that is tight.

You may like to know that 125 Ft bulk rolls of KT Tape are now available. They have 20% more tape than Kinesio. Also we have found that the SF adhesive pattern is delivering great service with users reporting average use of 5 to 7 days per application. KT Tape also was recently selected as the Best new Consumer Health product by the National Athletic Trainer Association.

I apply the tape the way they demonstrate for IT band on the hip. It was driving me crazy. I also had to ice it, rest it some but I applied the tape and it reduced the pain enormously.....i felt it right when I put it on. I swear by this stuff. I can't belive tape works like this. my chiro was the first one to apply it and I bought a roll from him. He taught me how to apply it since I can reach the area.

My achilles was always sore and tight. So I did have to figure out what was wrong but I also needed the pain relief. KT tape really worked. And I swear I got over it much faster. The culprit was the kind of shoes I was wearing and I got outfitted with the right shoes and did some icing and other things suggested by the PT. But the instand effect of the tape made it bearable. Stability shoes from now on!

I did one time use kt tape on my shoulder and inadvertantly some of it overlapped onto my neck. (Later I found out you are not supposed to put in on the scalene triangle which is on your neck.) It made me faint. But it did tell me something--that this stuff was really doing something. Regular tape doesn't make me faint! It is a contraindication of the tape and just want ot warn others to avoid taping on the neck! I think the crook of the elbow is a nother place to avoid

I like this pre cut kind. You do have to take care to apply it right and rub it to activate the glue. I have sweaty feet so I use the pre tape spray cramer tuf skin and that helps. i have not tried the other on a roll yet. i thought they were the same but I guess they are different brands?

if i need support, i use a brace like the aso or coach or the mueller tape. this provides some but it won't keep an ankle from turning over or anything. That is not what it is for really. I do heal faster and get pain relief.

I agree with the other review that it does not provide support. I've been looking for a 'magic' solution for runners knee, but KT tape just isn't it. You also really need to know the human anatomy and how to apply it. I recommend checking with a physical therapist or someone trained in this taping style. When running, it tends to get sweaty and the adhesive is not as strong as it says on the box. After day 1, it starts peeling, day 2 nearly gone and day 3 probably gone. In conclusion, it does provide relief for simple muscle aches or pulls but for greater injuries and those that are extremely internal, I just have not found it effective enough.

I watched the video on their website 3 times and then applied the product to my knee as directed. The first time a bent my knee, it came completely unattached from my skin. I tried it again as directed and the same thing happened. This product is useless and you are FAR better off getting a velcro-style brace to help support your knee...I didn't use it anywhere else so I'll only mention the knee. Do not waste your money on a High-Advertising-Dollar product, use what works. Joe

Owner's reply

Typically, if it's not sticking, your leg hair is too long (cut to 1/8 inch), knee is too sweaty or wet, there is lotion or residue that needs to be cleaned off with alcohol prior to application. Another common reason is that the tape glue was not activated at application by rubbing it and heating it up just a bit. This friction warms and activates the glue in the tape. Hope that helps. We have truly found this tape very beneficial and since you have it already, you can try these things to see if that helps.
