Treat Your Own Knees: Simple Exercises to Build Strength, Flexibility, Responsiveness and Endurance - by Jim Johnson P.T.

Treat Your Own Knees shows how to reduce or end knee pain by improving knee function. This is not a book for the very advanced medical practitioner but rather for laymen who have knee pain and don’t know what to do about it. It focuses on repairing damage and is very straightforward and simple to read. And it’s a bargain since it’s not expensive and the exercises don’t require special equipment.

The Modality

This book focuses on pain symptoms and where they originate which goes a long way in helping you treat your knees at the root cause. It focuses on what your knee does from the viewpoint of four areas: strength, flexibility, proprioception/balance, and endurance. If you have unexplainable knee pain, you probably just need to improve your knee function in one or more of these functional areas.

There are simple exercises in each functional category. It doesn’t get into seriously complicated anatomy speak either, making it a good book “for the rest of us”.  In addition, the vocabulary won’t be over your head either. Most of the exercises outlined have been tested in Jim Johnson’s PT practice and have had successful outcomes.

Pictures show you the exercises

Black-and-white drawings show exactly how to do the exercises and pinpoint the precise muscles responsible for the problem. This concise, simple guide provides an effective do-it-yourself program.

All in all, this book is a nice overview.

Good basic book on knee pain

This is an overall good presentation that is easy to understand. If you are up on your anatomy and very well versed in athletic injury, this is not the book for you. If you suffer from knee pain and are not an anatomy expert, it's a good book and can make a difference for less than a doctor co pay.

I'm basically anatomy stupid

I don't know anything about anatomy but this book has kept me active and my knees from hurting. It's easy to read and follow and I liked that and it did not happen right away.
